Microsoft Sql Server

Add User to Sysadmin Role Without Having Permissions

Adding user to server role is very simple task if Sql Server is working correctly, but what should we do if it was misconfigured by us or someone else. In such way that our login now longer works, sa login is disabled and we do not have any other login which would allow connect to Sql Server. This is situation is bad but it is not dramatic, we can use simple procedure outlined below to resolve the problem. The presented approach is based on the fact that our user (Windows user no matter if we are using AD or not) have administrator rights on Windows. Hence it implies that I will have full rights to Sql Server, when Sql Server will work in single user mode.

Sql Server Get Operating System Memory Statistics

Often Database Administrators would like to check memory usage on operating system level. Of course they can use many tools that works on operating system level. However Sql Server 2008 introduced the new dynamic management view sys.dm_os_sys_memory that enables DBA to use simple query to get those statistics.

The dynamic management view sys.dm_os_sys_memory returns returns a complete picture of memory on operating system level, including information about total and available physical memory, total and available page memory, system cache, kernel space and others.

How To Rename Microsoft Sql Server Database

From time to time Sql Server DBA have to change the database name. There can be several reasons to do so, for example durring the restore you assigned temporary name to a database. Another reason is that project for which you developed that database was renamed. From time to time such requirement comes from Management, who developed new naming convention for database names and you are responsible for implementing it.

Sql Server Display Column Name Using COL_NAME

In SQl Server Metadata Catalog we often see the use of the column named column_id. Usually it is not meaningful for us and we would prefer to see a real column name. Obviously we can always perform a join with sys.columns table and retrieve the column name directly, however quite often that join would only add unneeded complexity to our query. In such situations COL_NAME functions becomes very handy.

How To Check Authentication Mode in Microsoft Sql Server

Microsoft Sql Server can operate in two Authentication Modes, the first is Windows Authentication, and the second is Mixed Mode. In Windows Authentication Mode only the users, which have Windows Accounts (either Active Directory or Computer Accounts) can login to Sql Server. In Mixed Mode we can create in Sql Server logins, which do not have corresponding Windows Accounts. Windows Authentication Mode is suggested by Microsoft as the best practice; however Sql Server DBAs often have to configure Mixed Mode, because there are numerous applications on the market, which requires it. Ability to quickly check authentication mode of Sql Server is crucial if we are performing an audit or we have to work on an instance, on which we do not know anything.

Rename SA account in Sql Server

All Sql Server Administrators heard about SA account, how insecure it is and how many vulnerabilities exists that enable someone to break our Sql Server. Microsoft suggests using Windows Authentication Mode, instead of Mixed Mode. Mixed Mode exists only for backward compatibility. The safest solution would be to disable SA account and forget about the problem. However the world is not ideal and sometimes we have to use legacy 3rd party applications, which require Mixed Mode. In those situations we can rename SA account to make it harder to crack. Renaming Administrator account/s is a standard practice used by Windows Domain Administrators, so we will try to implement the same on Sql Server. We can rename SA account in Sql Server 2005 and Sql Server 2008.

Sql Server Exporting Data with BCP

BCP is one of the oldest tools you can find in current version of Sql Server, Microsoft started releasing it with early versions of Sql Server. It is designed to perform fast import and export operations. BCP is considered as a lightweight solution for import and export operations, if you need to perform transformations or error handling you should use Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS) instead. This blog post will present the basic ways how to export data from Sql Server database using BCP.

Configure Database Mail in Sql Server 2008

Database Mail in Sql Server 2008 enables sending outbound mail messages. Although the primary use of Database Mail is to send alert messages to administrators, it can also be used to send results of the query, or in Transact - SQL code. Database Mail uses the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) to transmit mail messages. It is important to remember that messages are sent by Sql Server Agent, so if it is not running the messages will be accumulated in msdb database and sent when Agent will be started.
